Football Squares: How the Game Works

Football squares is a game-day grid of 100 squares. Friends claim squares, the numbers are drawn at random, and the last digit of each team's score picks the winning square.

  1. Away across the topOne team takes the columns. Each column gets one digit, 0 to 9.
  2. Home down the sideThe other team takes the rows, with its own 0 to 9.
  3. 100 squares, one name eachEvery square is a pair of digits. The ringed one is Home 5, Away 2.

Build the board

Every board goes through the same three steps before kickoff. Follow one board from empty to ready.

  1. 1

    Start with 100 squares

Name the two teams. Home takes the rows and Away takes the columns. The digits are not drawn yet, so every row and column is still a question mark.

  2. 2

    Everyone claims their squares

The host shares one link. Players open it on their phone, tap as many open squares as they like and add their name. No account, no app.

  3. 3

    Fill the board, then draw

Once every square has a name, the host draws the numbers. Home and Away each get 0 to 9 in their own random order, and the draw locks the board in the same step.

Why the numbers come last

While squares are being claimed, nobody knows which digits a square will carry, not even the host, so nobody can pick a lucky pairing. The draw gives every square its pair at once, and from then on the names on the board are fixed.

Find the winning square

After the draw, every square is a pair of digits waiting for a score. Take the last digit of each team's score and follow them until they meet.

  1. 19 → 9Home's last digit is 9. Find 9 down the side and read across that row.
  2. 27 → 7Away's last digit is 7. Find 7 across the top and read down that column.
  3. 9 · 7They meet on Rob's square. Rob wins the Final.

The same lookup, four times a game

A game has four scoring checkpoints: Q1, Q2, Q3 and Final. Q1, Q2 and Q3 use the score at the end of the first, second and third quarters. Final uses the score when the game ends. Each one lands on its own square, and each lookup works exactly like the one above.

  2. Q26–13

    Row 6 · Column 3Andre wins Q2

  3. Q39–20

Questions before kickoff

Read the full BoardMob rules

What are Super Bowl squares?

The same game, played on the Super Bowl. The board, the draw and the winning squares all work exactly as this page shows. BoardMob is an independent app and is not affiliated with the NFL.

What happens in overtime, or if the game ends in a tie?

Q1, Q2 and Q3 are unaffected. Final always uses the score when the game actually ends, so overtime points count, and a tied score picks its square the same way as any other.

What if some squares are still open before kickoff?

The numbers can only be drawn on a full board held by at least 2 different players. If squares are still open, the host can add a player to a square or use Distribute to hand out everything that is left.

Does BoardMob handle money?

No. BoardMob runs the board and keeps score in points. It does not collect or pay out money.

Run your own board

Name the teams, share one link, and let everyone claim squares from their phone. Enter the score at Q1, Q2, Q3 and Final, and BoardMob lights up the winning square on every screen.
